2015 ICA Summer Camp Fair Lawn Week 2

WEEK 2 Fair Lawn

For the second week in a row and following the motto of “Gens Una Sumus” we offered the students of the Master camp new opportunities to compete for prizes in categories with members of the Scholastic or Day Camp.  Together the two groups competed in various sport, and none chess competitions.  Curiously the members of the day camp are holding fast and in most of the cases are winning in those disciplines.

However first let’s discuss chess accomplishments:

The best student in the master camp was Sophie Rasol.

The winners in the other groups were:

Tanya’s Group – Eric Z.

Genry’s Group – Kiran

David’s Group – Kento

Asher’s Group – Ron.

Getting a little ahead of ourselves Eric Z also proved his worth in the chess tournament winning section two, and the homework competition and thereby advanced to the Master Camp in week 3.

Dennis Li was the winner of the tournament in the Master Camp, while in Section 2 behind Eric Z were Jane, Eric T, and Anton.

Kento won Section 3, with Andrew in second place.

A sharp battle took place in the problem solving, as well as the Survival in a Simul competition.

The best in problem solving were: Jane (open), Philip (U600), Ron (unrated).

The Survival in a Simul Competition Winners were: Lily (open), Alex (U600), Jonathan (unrated) with Alex managing to score the only win against the simul giver during the entire week.

However, in the homework prize event there was a traditional silence.  Only in Tanya’s group did the students show enough awareness and will to win to compete in the category.  As a result two participants Eric Z. and Jane simultaneously crossed the finish line and split first place.

There was no way to determine a single winner in the best chess notation competition.  Teddy who just recently started playing chess and Anton were a class above any other competitors.

One of the chess prizes-for the blitz tournament-was only contested in the master camp and the winner was Dennis L.

While in the most fun chess event of the summer camp-the Team Chess tournament-the winners were the Chess Thinkers: i.e. Jane, Lily, Anton, and Alex.

The sporting events program for week two was as is traditionally the case very rich and unique in detail.

The best in Sports Groups Competition winners were:

Sergey – Alan

2006 & younger – Dennis L.

2005 A – Andrew

2005 B – Gavin.

Until the last moment it was not clear who would win the dodgeball prizes either for the boys, or the girls.  Only the last round of this event helped determine the winners and they were: Andrew (boys) and Jane (girls).

The Soccer winner was Eric Z.

“Name a boat a certain way that is how afloat she’ll stay” is what Sophie thought and suggested to her teammates in the relay race competition and why the team name became the “Pretty Pink Unicorns,” motivated by the observation that the teams with this name always win the given category.  Sophie’s teammates: Jane, Eric T, Lily, and Teddy all approved this decision and were not wrong at all! The wily Unicorns once again claimed a resounding victory.

Lily was the winner for the Swag walker prize while the healthiest lunch prize belonged to Ben.

Alex was a double winner in both the Art and Music categories for the full day nomination.

The newest member of the Master Camp, Grant, had a hard time of adjusting to his new responsibilities but due to his enormous will he won the prize for best effort.

The best team player was Gavin who became one of the few winners in the camp in this prestigious category.

Another prize winner was Matt who won the birthday boy prize for obvious reasons.

Congratulations to everyone for the successful completion of week two and we will be happy to see everyone in camp in the coming weeks.
