2015 ICA Summer Camp Teaneck Week 3

Week 3 Teaneck: What If Morgan Freeman Played Chess?

Unquestionably, the highlight of the week (at the very least for Slava) was the ICA students coming together to record a video that answers that very question.  It can be viewed on youtube via the following link (look out for cameos from all your favorite children parents! Oh and the video is based on a speech from the film Lean on Me where Morgan Freeman lays down the law. Modified to be more PG of course.)

Classical Chess tournament:

In the boring old classical chess tournament Lily Del Pilar came away with the win in section one after a tie-break last day win against Idan Glickman.  Kento had an easy time of it in winning section two, while in section three David Bolshov, despite a few draws, won first place with Alec Wei, and Ryan Chen sharing second place.

The best students in each group were:

Coach: Oren

Winner: Ryan

Coach: David

Winner: Leon

Coach: Gregory

Winner: Isak & Anthony

Coach: Libaski

Winner: Lily

Which once again goes to show as in Lily and Ryan’s case best students do have an easier time of it in the classical tournament.

Simul, Problem solving:

Antonina was the easy winner in the unrated simul section, while Lily Del Pilar despite being down to Idan at the beginning of the week came back to win the event with a 60+ move game on the second to last day.

In problem solving Leon Berenfeld won in the unrated group (Leon did great in David’s study group as well) while Kovi Pahmer won the rated group (he was probably the only one who participated).

Sports Groups and Sports Prizes:

Age Group: 2002

Winner:  Kovi, Idan

Age Group: 2006

Winner: Austin

Age Group: 2007-2008

Winner: Isak

Idan and Kovi split their sports groups prize but only Kovi was awarded the prize for it since Idan would go on to win prizes in the team events as usual.

Team Events, Soccer, and Dodgeball:

“Big”David Bolshov was the winner for dodgeball as he showed some good instinctive dodging skill at his age and was of course on the most winning teams throughout the week.  Benedetto Lozzano was the winner for Soccer.

In the team events once again Idan Glickman proved his experience as captain completely trumps that he has last pick as he chose last in the relay races and still led his team to first place (the fact that his team name was the Pretty Pink Unicorns which was also the name of the winning relay race team in Fair Lawn does not matter at all.) The team also included Austin, Kevin, and Leon.

Idan’s team “I’m a child eating demon” (the premise of the team names was since Slava has to announce who is playing who he has to say things like “I stink,” “I’m stupid,” etc. All the teams chose a name with that thought in mind) also won for blitz/bughouse and again despite being the only team with an extra player as an alternate which could have easily disrupted rhythm.  The team members were Isak, Eric, Kevin, and David.

Art, Trivia:

In the art contest despite a few worthy contenders Sharvanya stood out as anybody else vying for the title won a prize in other categories so it made sense to give it to Sharvanya as she drew everyday and her pictures met the criteria for color and detail.

In the trivia contest which consists of 20 multiple choice questions (plus a best smiley face picture tie-break) and makes an effort to allow the students to use their logic and listening skill to answer the questions Idan was the unsurprising winner with a score of 14/20 though Kevin Wei’s 11/20 for second place was impressive in that it seemed like he had trouble listening but ended up doing great in this contest either way.
