Happy “Campers” Win In LARGEST ICA QUAD EVER At Glen Rock While US Men’s Team Wins GOLD At Chess Olympiad in Baku!
As the United States Men’s Team Won Gold At the recent Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan many of this year’s ICA students/campers won first place and money at the inaugural “Super” Saturday Quads Tournaments at our new location in Glen Rock. This past September 10th in what was our best turn out ever (66 players participated which doubled the previous record) 10 of the 14 sections were won by students who attended our camps. In 13 of the 14 sections second place finishers were also kids who attended our chess camps over this summer (only the open section which was contested between four adults did not have any campers participating).
Unrated section
The unrated section was won by Michael Shkop with ICA students and campers Keith Shi, and Evan Noonan sharing second place. The unrated group had twelve players.
U500 section
The U500 section was won by ICA dad Steven McCarthy who graciously split his winnings between second place finishers Leon Berenfeld, and Kevin Wei both of whom attended our camp. (Also Kudos to 3 ICA Dads!!!: Steven, Rag Devarakonda, and Eugene Boutom who bravely took part in the event. As we mentioned before we feel it is only a positive when parents don’t just coach their kids but climb in their shoes so to speak and take part).
U600 A & B
We had two U600 sections paired off as two individual quads and both were won by Saturday morning classmates and ICA campers Avital Nozic, and Jerry Du. Both won all three of their games.
U700
The u700 section was won by Udbhav Devarakonda, an ICA camper and student, whose dad Rag, and brother Shuban also participated in the event.
U800
Kenneth Shi, an ICA camper, won all three of his games in the U800 section.
U1000
Ron Baver, an ICA camper, beat two and drew one to win the u1000 section.
U1100
Alexander Wang, an ICA camper, won the u1100 section by sweeping all three games.
U1200
The u1200 was co-won by longtime ICA student, camper, and part-time trouble maker Jonathan Plavnik, and longtime ICA student, camper, and chatterbox Michael Shinkar. Both won two of their games while losing one of the others.
U1300
Longtime ICA student, and former camper, Joshua Katz won u1300 on the strength of a perfect 3 for 3 score.
U1500
Pretty Pink Unicorn, and longtime ICA student, and camper Sophie Rasol won all three games to win the u1500 section.
U1700
Three ancient ICA students and campers, Mathew Lerman, Ryan Xu, and Alessandro Demarchi-Blumstein split the money with two wins each and one loss.
U1900
One of the few sections without an ICA camper, or student as a winner saw nice guy, Daniel “I’m going to bring home the” Bacon win first place on the strength of two wins and one draw. With a name like that the pun/nickname was just to be utilized (though my favorite is still Solomon “the wage earner” Lerner).
Open
Finally, the boring old open section with four adults was won by “Mr. Gambit” Lev Zilbermints who drew two games after winning his first against highest rated Roy Greenberg.
Please tell your friends and stop by for the quads whenever you can. The prize fund has now been increased from 50 to 60 dollars (we have kept the entry fee the same).
