Scholastic Chess Camp Week #6 Glen Rock Report:
Week six of our scholastic camp in Glen Rock was most notable because of the professional manner in which the campers handled their tournament games. This was clear because the games were not ending as quickly as in previous weeks. The most significant example of this was in the youngest section six which rivaled the veterans of section three in terms of the lengths of the games.
The winner of section six was Ethan Z who in part due to his serious demeanor won all five of his tournament games. Ryan was the winner in section five and also managed to win every single one of his games. The best in section four was Thomas, while in section three winner Ilya showed the most stable and serious results.
One of the day camp regulars Michael P went up to Master Camp and did so quite successfully playing against more experienced opponents and scoring three out of five points. However, the winner of the master camp tournament was Alex Biyanov.
The GM camp tournament winner was Mathew Lerman.
The winner of the Master Camp Blitz tournament was Jane.
The best students in each group were:
There was a pitched battle in the problem solving competition (open and unrated) that was decided at the very end of the event. In the open section Taddeo overcome Thomas by just one puzzle, while in the unrated section a photo finish couldn’t determine who was better and so the prize was split between Stefan and Valerie.
The winner in the Simul competition (open section) was Jonathan, who using the motto, “I came, I saw, I conquered,” beat the coach and thereby won the simul event outright. The winner in the unrated section of the simul was Ethan Z.
The unpopular homework prize was also claimed this week with the unrated winner being Valerie, and the rated winner being Phillip.
As in the previous week the sports competitions between Master and Day camps were combined to determine a single prize winner among everyone. In the end, the girls of Master camp were stronger and Jane won for Soccer, while Jessica won for dodgeball. However, Aidan (dodgeball), and Phillip (soccer) from day camp won for the boys.
In the sports competitions only one student from master camp (Alex B) could win the prize in question. Thereby the winners were:
Age Group 2004-2005 – Alex B.
Age Group 2006-2007 – Taddeo & Angelina
Age Group 2007-2008 – Alex K.
Age Group 2009 – Stefan
Age Group 20010 – Ryan
The relay race competition was won by the mixed Day+Master camp nicknamed “I Don’t Know” which was comprised of Jessica, Kirill, Alex K. and Ryan.
In the traditional Friday Blitz/Bughouse tournament the students of GM camp joined in the fray. Here Jessica once again proved herself an excellent team player and together with Josh from GM camp on a team named “Yeah That Leg” they won the GM/Master section. In the Day camp section the winners were the team “ Better Than ever Kangaroo Kings” who were comprised of Ilya, Thomas, Ryan, and Aidan.
Surbhi was the winner for Healthy lunch, while the winner for Art was Stefan.
Congratulations to all the winners and here is to more athletic, and artistic accomplishments in the future.
See everyone next week!
