2018 Chess Camp Glen Rock Week 1

2018 Chess Camp Glen Rock Week 1

Our summer camp in Glen Rock cordially welcomed a new group of young chess players during Week two of the ICA Scholastic Summer Program. Every camper had an opportunity to find their favorite activity and earn prizes in various nominations! Given the fact that almost all of our students demonstrated their best personal and athletic abilities, there was an amazing, creative and friendly atmosphere!

From Monday to Thursday the campers played in a traditional chess tournament with longer time controls. As a result, our camper Ilya was the winner in Section 1 going undefeated in all his games! Congrats, Ilya, great job!  Felix and Aaron S. shared second place in the group.

Albert took first place in Section 2, and Jonathan Perchuk took second place.

The winner of Section 3 was Conor, while his younger brother Declan came in second.

Eva, the birthday girl for this week was the strongest player in Section 4. She shared a delicious variety of cakes with campers and coaches to celebrate and received her Birthday Girl Prize!

This week we had six training groups, but six prizes were not enough to reward all the distinguished winners. We would like to recognize that Felix and Angelina from Tanya’s group were tied up after the last day and crossed the finish line simultaneously! Unfortunately, for the other campers there was no such drama in other groups. Albert was the winner in Sean’s group, Ariella won in David’s group, Farres won in Genry’s group, Eva won in Ethan’s group, and Roy won in Philip/Ernies’s group.

Angelina and Ariella won the Problem-Solving Competition in the Open section, and Jade won in the Unrated section. Angelina should gain extra recognition because she continued participating in the contest even after she won it.

Ilya, Felix and Aaron S. distinguished themselves in the Survival in a Simul Competition by winning at least one game against the simul giving coaches! Great job Guys!

Angelina and Andrew shared first place for the “Home work” event. Moreover, Angelina and Andrew, as well as Valerie who joined them, also won in a new category which we dubbed the “Most Organized Award”, that will now be given to the most responsible, accurate and helpful students.

We also can consider this week one of family victories. The Moon Family (Aaron and Roy) and the Dyadyuk Family (Ariella and Felix) won the Healthy Lunch Competition!

Anthony and Jonathan Perchuk were the Art Contest Winners, and the very young but very hard working Sean and Suvir got our Best Effort Awards!

There were many prizes in our extensive sports program.

The Winners of the Best In Sports Groups were:

Group 1 – Declan

Group 2 – Ariella

Group 3 – Quinlan

Group 4 – Felix

Group 5 – Conor

Group 6 – Farres

Felix became the best Soccer Player!

If you are asking who won the most popular sports event in our camp (not counting chess, of course) the answer is: our dodgeball winners were Quinlan (among the boys) and Valerie (among the girls).

Finally, the team of Anthony&Roy (Day Camp) won our Friday Blitz&BugHouse team Tournament. Also Michael P. stood out in this nomination in the GM/Master Camp section. He won together with Avery from the GM Camp.

We are glad that all our students had a wonderful and educational time in our camp. See you during week 3!
