ICA Scholastic Chess Camp Teaneck Week 6 report: 
Disney’s Bolt Beats Rainy Day Blues!

Week six was terrible for the camp’s sports aficionados as our time outside was greatly reduced by torrential rain on three out of the five camp days.  We were saved by Disney’s “Bolt,” a movie we watched during our scheduled outside time on Monday and Thursday.  The unique competition for the week was a Trivia Contest based on this movie. There was a four-way tie for first which we did not have time to break, so there was no winner for this competition.

Our tournament winners were our old-timer Dillon Shelton in section one, his sister Kaylie Shelton in section two, and Enzo Lazar in section three. 

The best students in each group were Dillon Shelton in Slava’s group, Raymond Wang in Ivette’s group, Joanne Shen in Ryan’s group, and Thomas Weichsel in Alessandro’s group.

Kevin Wei and Soohan Cho were winners in the rated and unrated sections of the Survival in the Simul Competition, respectively.

Jacob Pollard, who competed in a rated section for the first time, was the winner for best notation.

We had two blitz tournaments on days when we could not go outside. Dillon and Enzo were the two section winners on Monday, and David Milstein won the single section we ran on Friday.

On the two days that we did go outside, our winners in sports groups were, from youngest to oldest, Thomas, Mia, Lucas, and Kaylie. The winner for dodgeball was Yakov Mankowitz (Charles and Kevin could not touch him this week).

In Friday’s relay races, it was team “Dwayne Johnson,” led by Kevin Wei, who was accompanied by teammates Mia Chen, Joanne Shen, Soohan Cho, and Davin Shin, that dominated the field.

Finally, the winner in the blitz/bughouse event was team “21 Jacobs” led by Jacob Pollard, who was accompanied by Lucas Chen and Christian Lavrinovich.  Jacob’s team was in a three-way tie for first going into the last round, but they pulled away as Jacob scored an upset win in his blitz game against the much higher rated and stronger David.
