2018 Chess Camp Glen Rock Week 7

Week 7 Report – Glen Rock

The weather forecast promised little other than daily rain and thunderstorms in week 7. We were prepared to have limited opportunities to walk to the park and play sports. The reality of generally nice weather was a pleasant surprise! We were prevented from going outside on only one day, and on one other day we got caught in the rain when we were already in the park.

Some of us went under the tent near the playground, while the most courageous campers kept playing dodge ball in the shade of trees, which partially protected them from the rain. After this morning "shower” we were hesitant to go outside again, so we instead held a rainy-day blitz tournament.  Taddeo and Elizabeth won it, and Andrew and Luke shared second place. Ethan was victorious in Master Camp’s week-long blitz tournament

The classic time control tournament was held in six sections. Ryan X. won the Grand Master Camp section, and Richard won in the Master Camp section while Andrew took second place. Ryan L. was the strongest in the section three. Kirill, Stefan and Maanas shared first place in section four. Ava won section five, and Arthur won section six.

Best in Chess Groups were: Ryan X. (Alex’s GM Camp), Ethan (Sergey’s Master Camp), Angelina (Tanya’s group), Maanas (Sean’s group), Ava (Richard’s group), Surbhi (David’s group), and Valerie (Philip’s group).

There was a steadfast struggle in two out of three sections in the Problem Solving Competition. Unfortunately, no one wished to fight over the prize in the unrated section. Taddeo got first place in the Open Section, and Anthony was the best in the U500 Section. Debra (Open Section) won the Survival in a Simul Competition by defeating a coach, and Vaishnavi did best in the Unrated Section.

The Team Blitz-Bughouse Tournament was held in two sections. The first section’s teams consisted of GM and Master campers along with the strongest players from the Day Camp. Spencer’s team (GM Camp) and Taddeo’s team (Day Camp) won in their respective sections. Kirill and Paul won in the similar competition in the Day Camp Section.

Lily got the Best Notation prize.  Avital was the Best Team Player, and Stefan was the Most Organized Person this week. Paul won the Best Effort Prize, and Kai got the Healthy Lunch Prize. Graham, Eva, Taddeo, and Michael won in the Art Contest. Geoffrey, as well as the team of Alex, Elise, and Blake were the winners in the Math Contest.

As for out outdoor activities, now we have a new option: playing on the playground. It became as popular dodgeball, the sport that has captivated most of the camp for a generation. It seems like we’ll need to establish new prizes like “Swinging Champion” or “Best Slide Rider.” But for now, we still have prizes in our three classic sports categories: Best in Sports Groups, Dodge Ball Winner and Soccer Winner.

Just like last week, Master Camp’s combined with Day Camp for sports. Best in Sports Groups were: Graham (Group 1), Joey (Group 2), Michael (Group 3), Jane (Group 4), Elise (Group 5), and Debra (Group 6).

Taddeo (boys) and Jane (girls) were victorious in the Dodge Ball Competition, and Luke (boys) and Elise (girls) were the strongest players in the Soccer Competition.

We had one Birthday Boy (Jaden) and one Birthday Coach (Philip) this week. Both were well celebrated and got nice presents.

This concludes our week 7 report. There are only three more weeks of camp remaining!
