2018 Chess Camp Glen Rock Week 8

Glen Rock Week 8 Report

The smaller the number of weeks remaining until the end of the summer, the more crowded our Day Camp gets. Since the Grandmaster Camp is closed for weeks eight and nine, we were able to increase the number of campers in the Day Camp. Despite this, the camp was 100% filled.

We had to include our master campers in some Day Camp events to prevent them from being bored without the grandmaster campers. They competed with Day campers for prizes in sports and several other categories.

Our classical tournament included six sections. Ilya and Grant tied for first in the Master Camp section. Taddeo won clear first while Ricky took second in section two. Kiril was the best in section three, and Christian was the best in section four. Graham was the winner in section five with half of a point more than second place finisher Paul. Emilien was the winner in section six.

There were seven Chess Groups during this week. Sophie was the best in the Master Camp (Sergey's group). Ricky won in Tanya’s group. We were not able to determine a single winner in Hana's group, so the prize was shared by Colin and Calum. Blake M. was the strongest student in Sean’s group, Graham won in Genry’s groupDavid was victorious in Richard’s group, and Vaishnavi was the strongest in David’s group. Sergey's blitz tournament was won by Sophie.

Two prizes out of a possible three were given in the Problem Solving Competition. The fight was intense in both the open and under 400 sections. Anton won in the open section and Kai scored the highest in the under 400 section. Colin did best in the Survival in a Simul Competition, and Avital won in the Homework Competition. Sebastian got the Best Notation Prize.

Due to the large number of participants, the traditional Team Blitz-Bughouse tournament was played in three sections this week. Sophie & Avital won in the Master Camp section, Valerie B. & Graham formed the strongest team in the Day Camp 1 section, and Nick and Kai won in the Day Camp 2 section.

The new opportunity to play on the playground has become more and more popular in the Day Camp. As a result, no one wished to play soccer, and no prize was awarded for it.

Regarding the ever-popular Dodgeball, prizes were awarded in two hotly-contested categories as usual. This time the best players were Avital (girls) and Kirill (boys).

The winners in Sports Groups were: Aditi (Group 1), Blake M. (Group 2), Valerie B. (Group 3), Anton (Group 4), Taddeo (Group 5), Elise (Group 6), and Bowen (Group 7).

Kishan was the Most Organized Person of week eight, and Hunter earned the title of Best Team Player. Jonathan got the Best Effort Prize. Avital won the Healthy Lunch competition. Calum got the Music Award, while Victor, Graham and Royina shared the Art Award. Taddeo and Emilien shared the Math Award.

Week eight is complete, and there are only two weeks left until the end of summer camp! We are no longer able to enroll new students as we unfortunately do not have any vacancies. We welcome our currently-enrolled campers for weeks nine and ten, and we are sure that these remaining weeks will be interesting and educational as always!
