April 17 Report

Last week we welcomed back players to our Super Saturday Quads on April 17th! A big thank you to everybody who came to play! And a special thank you to our new players: Jack, Kyle, Diego, Aditya, Sara, Kyle, and Augustine. Let us take a look at the highlights:

In Over 1000 Section 1, the winner of this strong section was Jack! On this occasion the tournament was very evenly matched, and there were four draws in six games. However, Jack edged out second-place Yuvanshu by 0.5 points by winning his first-round game. Nicely done!

In Over 1000 Section 2, tying for first place with 2 points each were Xuan and Matthew. Xuan was returning from a victory last time, and repeated the feat here, showing great consistency in play. Matthew, meanwhile, did very well to bounce back from his loss to Xuan to win his other two games. Congratulations to both players!

In Over 1000 Section 3, the tournament was fascinating because we had a rare three-way tie for first! Ekeoma, Benjamin, and Aaron all finished with 2/3 points, winning against one of their fellow victors and losing against one of their fellow victors. Anyway, great work to all three players!

In Over 1000 Section 4, Sara won with a dominant 3/3 points. Using the Sicilian Defense and Scotch Game, she was able to punish any tactical mistakes in the opening and thereby gain significant advantages. Amazing job!

In Under 1000 Section 1, some technical difficulties in the games did not stop Sophia from winning the section with a perfect score. In her games, she quickly attacked the opponent’s castled king, either checkmating or winning a lot of material before long. This allowed her to go on to win all her games. Great job Sophia!

In Under 1000 Section 2, there was an extra-large section with doubled total prizes! In the 6-players Swiss system tournament, first-place Arthur was unstoppable with 3 points, and Ari gained an outright second with 2 points. Congratulations!

In Under 1000 Section 3, two players were evenly matched and tied for first with 2.5 points. Congratulations to George and Grayson! After drawing their first game, they played excellently in the other two to maintain wins. Once again, congratulations to both players!

In Under 1000 Section 4, two players, Remy, and Jaeden, also shared the victory with 2.5 points. Their draw was mostly even, though Jaeden did have to fight back after dropping a minor piece. Another interesting game was Remy’s victory over Kenton, which had many tactics and twists. You can check out the game here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/12420399453. Great job!

In Under 1000 Section 5, Jakob came out on top with a perfect score, and Andrew was second with 2/3. To win the tournament, Jakob excellently capitalized on his opponents’ mistakes with solid and aggressive play. Congratulations to Jakob!

In Under 1000 Section 6, Augustine was the victor with 3/3. The decisive game ended up being a first-round victory over second-place James, in which Augustine came back from a rook down to gain a large material advantage. Despite being down material in all his games at the beginning, he was able to turn them into wins, showing remarkable resilience. Nice work Augustine!

In Under 1000 Section 7, the winner was Jeremy with a perfect 3/3. In each of his games, he won quickly through sharp tactics that exposed the king’s weaknesses. He used his bishops to devastating effect. Congratulations to Jeremy!
