April 24Th, 2021 Quads Report

On April 24th we welcomed back players to ICA’s Super Saturday Quads! We had a pretty large attendance today, with 12 sections and two with 6 players! Once again, we would like to thank all participants for joining us! Special thank you to all our new players: Maxim, David, Alexander, Ian, Michael, Rohit, Scott, Spandan, Jonathan, Yujeong, Anthony, and Aarnav!

In Over 1000 Section 1, we once against had an extraordinarily strong section! Although he had a bye in the third round, Maxim held it out for the first two rounds to win each of them! Oleg was right behind him, but it was the second round where the two battled out, and Maxim ended up on top! Well played to all, and congrats Maxim!

In Over 1000 Section 2, we saw a race for first place between two strong contenders, newcomer Ian and Alexander. When the two went head-to-head, Ian emerged as the victor. It was in this game that Ian demonstrated the power of pawns and centralized bishops in the endgame, utilizing his opponent’s weak dark squares, and it is the game of the week! Check it out here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/13028012535 . However, with Ian’s loss in the third round, and Alexander’s win, the two ended up sharing the crown for first place, well done!

In Over 1000 Section 3, there is no dispute over who took home the gold today! Matthew showed everybody how it’s done and won every game he played! Through treacherous endgames and aggressive openings, Matthew demonstrated his knowledge of chess in fashion! Nicely done!

In Over 1000 Section 4, it was a close battle for first place between Geoffrey and Sophia, and only one would emerge victorious. When the two went head-to-head, Geoffrey bested Sophia in a rook and pawn endgame, giving Geoffrey the edge he needed to win first place! Excellent job!

In Under 1000 Section 1, we saw another tight run for first place between Daniel and new player Spandan! Unfortunately for Spandan, when the two played against each other, Spandan’s queen had no escape from Daniel’s pieces, as it was trapped in a well thought out exchange. Although Spandan made a grand entrance into our quads, Daniel took home the gold for this week, congratulations!

In Under 1000 Section 2, the competition was fierce. In the end, Ari claimed victory with 2 points! There were two other players trying to catch up to Ari, Mark, and Arthur, but with a draw against each other each were 0.5 points behind Ari, giving him the gold. Well played!

In Under 1000 Section 3, we look at our first action-packed swiss of the day! With 6 players in this section, these games were certainly not lackluster. Although he drew to Alvin in the first round, Kirill went on to win his next two games with very aesthetic mates and tactics, earning him the crown of first place! Nice job!

In Under 1000 Section 4, we saw another clean sweep performed by none other than Jeremy! He took out his main competitor Rachel, in the very first round, and ended up taking the crown over her by that one point! With his offensive playstyle, Jeremy sure earned his win! Excellent job!

In Under 1000 Section 5, George and Jaeden were racing to grab the gold! When it came down to the game between the two of them, unfortunately time was not on Jaeden’s side, and George ended up winning enough material to win him the game. Thus, George ended up winning all three games, and first place! Awesome!

In Under 1000 Section 6, we had an interesting finishing standings! Three out of the four players tied for second place with each having one point! Which leaves one player on top… and it’s Shashank! While his opponents only won one game each, Shashank ended up winning all three of his! Awesome job and congrats on first place!

In Under 1000 Section 7, Aarav and Hovannes were in, yet again, another close race for first place. When it came down to the game between the two, although Aarav had a promising attack, Hovannes escaped and won the game. However, when Hovannes went on to lose his next match, Aarav won his. As such, we have a tie for first place between two strong players! Well done to both!

In Under 1000 Section 8, we had the second swiss section of the tournament! This was the closest matchup of the whole tournament, as two contenders for first place both had 2 points coming into the last round and needed a win to take it home. In the end, new player Aarnav made his name known, as he took the victory and the gold over new player Yujeong. While both played tremendously, Aarnav emerged on top to claim victory! Congratulations!
