May 15Th, 2021 Quads Report

Last week we welcomed back players to our Super Saturday Quads on May 15th! A big thank you to everybody who came to play! And a special thank you to our new players: Kavya, Alex C, Avyay, Kian, and Peyton! Sadly, we did have a player who violated our fair play rules this week. We want to emphasize that we do not tolerate cheaters and that this player has been punished accordingly by ourselves and chess.com. Let us look at the highlights:

In Over 1000 Section 1, the winner was Zachary. It was a great performance from him, as he won all his games. The key to his success was a use of tactics like forks that was nothing short of brilliant, repeatedly helping to gain the advantage. Nicely done!

In Over 1000 Section 2, Mark came out on top with a dominant 3/3 points. In each of his games, he identified weaknesses in the position of the opponent’s king and capitalized on this very precisely. He either got a winning position, or just checkmated the opponent outright. Amazing job Mark!

In Under 1000 Section 1, George narrowly secured first place with an impressive 2.5 points, just .5 ahead of second-place newcomer Kavya. On this occasion he showed that he could attack and defend: he won through beautiful attacks against Kavya and Angie, but defended very well against Ethan to draw when two pawns down. Congrats! Additionally, this section included many interesting games worth looking at. Just one example is Kavya’s win over Ethan, which included a breakthrough in a locked position. In Under 1000 Section 2, Peyton had an exceptionally good first performance with 2.5/3 to secure victory in his first tournament with us. He used strong middlegame maneuvers to get an advantage in all his games.

In Under 1000 Section 3, Jakob continued his fantastic form with a third victory in a row, and his fourth in the past five tournaments. His rise has been incredible, and once again he finished with a perfect score. Congratulations on the streak and the victory Jakob!

In Under 1000 Section 4, Yujeong clinched first prize with 2.5/3. Hovannes was close behind on 2/3, but Yujeong’s two victories in the first two rounds ensured that he needed only a draw in the last game to win the tournament. Overall he succeeded due to his eye for tactics - great job Yujeong!

In Under 1000 Section 5, there was no stopping Andrew, who won with 2.5 points. To triumph, Andrew employed dangerous tactics along the h-file, which ended with two consecutive checkmates on the same square, h7. Congratulations to Andrew!

In Under 1000 Section 6, Adam was the victor with 3/3. The decisive game ended up being a first-round victory over second-place Jacob, in which Adam managed to convert a narrow one-pawn lead into a heavy advantage, which in turn led to the win. Nice job!
