Last Saturday we welcomed back players to our Super Saturday Quads on May 29th! As always, thank you to all participants for joining us! And as always, a special thank you to our new participants: Aaron, Ruoming, Srishanth, Daniel, Philip, Achyut, and Shyam.
Sadly, we did have a player who violated our fair play rules this week. We want to emphasize that we do not tolerate cheaters and that this player has been punished accordingly by ourselves and chess.com. Let us look at the highlights:
In Over 1000 Section 1, Albert S clinched first place with an excellent 3/3 performance. Indeed, it was a great display from him, and he won all of his games through some very clever attacking combinations, especially on the dangerous seventh rank. Nicely done!
In Over 1000 Section 2, Adrian was the winner with 3 points. In his games, he used queen-rook combinations to either gain the advantage, or just checkmate his opponent. He played attacking chess overall, but also was able to defend against his opponents’ threats very precisely. Amazing job Adrian!
In Over 1000 Section 3, Sophia took first place with 2.5/3. She played extremely well, and was able to take advantage of slight mistakes from her opponents to use various tactics. One very crazy tactical game was Sophia vs Peter, which was won through a nice checkmate in four. This is our game of the week, and you can see it here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/16054472545. In Under 1000 Section 1, we had a tie for first place between Ben and Jakob. Both players finished with a solid 2 points, and nobody in the section could avoid at least one defeat. For Ben, two great endgame conversions in his first two games ensured a good finish in the standings. For Jakob, if you count joint victories, this was his fifth victory in a row, which is one of our best ever streaks! Congratulations to both players!
In Under 1000 Section 2, we had another tie, with George and Ruoming both finishing with 2 points. In the game between them, George was able to win by using his queen to overwhelm Ruoming’s rook and bishop, but Ruoming nonetheless went on to win her last game, thus tying the two of them at the end. Well played to both players!
In Under 1000 Section 3, Jack came out on top with 2.5/3. He used his opening knowledge to punish his opponents when they made early errors. He held on to these advantages with solid play until an opening presented itself, then finished each game with a quick attack on the enemy king.
In Under 1000 Section 4, Christian grabbed first place with a perfect score. He won his games through some very destructive attacks, which sometimes even involved sacrifices to blast open the opponent’s defenses and open the way for his pieces. Congratulations Christian!
In Under 1000 Section 5, the tournament was remarkably close. All players had at least one win and at least one loss. But in the end, with 2/3, Andrew and Aarnav tied for first. Going into the last game, Aarnav was a point ahead, but Andrew defeated him with black after using a knight fork to go up a rook. So the players deservedly shared the spoils in the end. Good work!
In Under 1000 Section 6, Hovannes won with 2.5 points, just .5 ahead of second place Kenton, who himself was only .5 ahead of third-place Alex. The key to victory on this occasion was a good eye for hanging pieces. Just by taking those, Hovannes was often able to gain a sizable advantage. Nicely done Hovannes!
In Under 1000 Section 7, we had an extra-large six-player Swiss section with extra prizes. And in the end, something very, very rare happened: there was actually a four-person tie for first! Avyay, Justin, Daniel, and Vincent all finished with the same record of two wins and one loss. Excellent job to all players!
In Under 1000 Section 8, we had another interesting event in the form of a three-way tie for first between Alvin, Achyut, and James! These players all also finished with two wins and a loss, by winning against and losing to one of the other players they tied with. Congratulations everybody!
