June 5Th, 2021 Quads Report

On June 5th we welcomed back players to ICA’s Super Saturday Quads! With 8 sections, players competed for the crown yet again!  Once again, we would like to thank all participants for joining us! Special thank you to all our new players: Jacob C., Shalini, Jacob S., Charles, Raghav, and Reyansh!

In Over 1000 Section 1, there was a clear winner with 2.5 points! Congratulations to Anisha, who maneuvered around her opponents to checkmate them using her knowledge of forks and pins. Although falling to perpetual checks to Adrian, Anisha ended up on top of the leaderboard with her two-and-a-half points. Nicely done!

In Over 1000 Section 2, we saw an interesting result! This week in this section, we did not have one, not two, but three winners! Each player scored 2 points, earning each of them a tie for first place. Peter started the tournament off strong with the first two round wins, Mark fell short in the second round but started strong and finished strong with a win in the first and last round, and Jacob S. did not let his first loss stop him and went on to win his next two games. Congrats to all!

In Under 1000 Section 1, there was yet another close race to first. Andrew was so close to clinching the first place but fell short to Shalini. Andrew then finished with a strong 2 points, but Shalini’s strong chess got her the point she needed from her game with Andrew to secure her the gold! With 2.5 points Shalini wins this time! Nicely done!

In Under 1000 Section 2, there was a close race to first. Daniel C. and Yujeong tied against each other in a king/queen/pawn endgame that hit a dead end in the second round. Although both players won their final game, Yujeong came out on top because he also won his first game of the day. Congrats to Yujeong on your first place! Well deserved!

In Under 1000 Section 3, we had a section with 6 players! Here, with 2.5 points, Christian took home the gold! With a first-round draw to Leon due to perpetual checks, Christian secured his win with two more wins in the following rounds. His games showed the importance of piece activity, and in his short game against Everest, you can see how his active pieces quickly turned the game around in this tournament’s game of the week! In Under 1000 Section 4, we saw three players tied for second place with each having one point… but one player came out in the end over the others! Rachel did not lose one game and soared her way to first place with a perfect score of 3 points! Her knowledge of endgames and tactics allowed her to easily outplay her opponents. Well played Rachel!

In Under 1000 Section 5, we had yet another three-way tie for first place! Three players each scored 2 points, so congratulations to David, Alvin, and new player Charles! Each player demonstrated their expertise in positions without queens, tactics, and attacking initiatives! Well-deserved by all and congrats!

In Under 1000 Section 6, new player Raghav made a flashy entrance into Super Saturday Quads by winning his first tournament with us and earning a perfect score. Raghav slowly chipped away at his opponents’ pieces until it was fit for him to deliver the checkmate. Well played!

**TD NOTE** There was a technical issue in Under 1000 section 6 that resulted in Vincent accidentally not getting paired after the first round (he won 1st round game!). We have compensated him for this issue and will keep an eye out for it in the future to make sure our players are not affected in this way in the future.
