June 19Th, 2021 Quads Report

Last week we welcomed back players to our Super Saturday Quads on June 19! As always, a big thank you everybody who played! And a special thank you to our first-time participants: Ari K, Vivek, Nitya, Varun, and Darsh! Let us look at the highlights:

In Over 1000 Section 1, the tournament was very tight, but in the end, Ricnesh won out with 2.5 points. He finished just .5 points ahead of second-placed Ari K, who had a great Quads debut. After two excellent victories in his first two games, Ricnesh only needed a draw in the last one to secure the outright victory. This also starts a streak, as this was Ricnesh’s second Section 1 victory in a row - nicely done!

In Over 1000 Section 2, Philip put in a great performance to win the tournament with a perfect score. In his games, he gained the advantage using tactics like pins and deflections. Then, he converted those advantages into wins with great precision. Excellent work Philip!

In Over 1000 Section 3, we had a rare result - a three-way tie for first! Indeed, Sophia, Peter, and Murugan all finished with 2/3. This was especially interesting as all the games between the winners ended up being draws, displaying just how evenly matched their battles were. Anyway, congratulations to all!

In Under 1000 Section 1, we had another rare three-way tie for first! It was between Daniel, Shalini, and Jakob, who all finished with 2 points. This time, the games between the winners were all extremely unbalanced, and there were no draws. One example is the game between Daniel and Jakob, our game of the week because of its many great tactics and sacrifices. You can see the game here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/17862737869. Once again, congratulations to all!

In Under 1000 Section 2, we had an extra-large section of 6 people with extra prizes! In the end, with a perfect score of 3/3, the winner was Rachel, and additionally, Charles took second place with 2/3. In her games, Rachel showed that she could win through sharp middlegame checkmates, or lengthy endgame victories - she could adapt to any position. Great job!

In Under 1000 Section 3, Vivek, playing with us for the very first time, took first place with 2.5 points. He played excellent, entertaining, and attacking chess, and was rewarded with this excellent victory. Hopefully, this will be the start of a great career with us - congrats Vivek!

In Under 1000 Section 4, the winner with 3/3 was Daniel J. One of the main reasons for his success in the tournament was his spirit and resilience. For example, he unfortunately lost his queen on only move 5 in his second game but fought back to win instead of resigning. Great work Daniel!

In Under 1000 Section 5, Achyut and Raghav tied for first with 2 points. It was a very crazy tournament, with no player being able to avoid defeat, but the two winners were often able to spot common checkmate patterns like back-rank mates, and that was the difference. Congratulations to Achyut and Raghav!
