June 26Th, 2021 Quads Report

Last Saturday we welcomed back players to our final Super Saturday Quads of June on June 26! Thank you to everybody who joined us! And a special thank you to our new players: Priyansh, Christine, Juno, and Luka! Let us look at the highlights:

In Over 1000 Section 1, Ricnesh stormed to his third consecutive victory in the highest section! He did this by achieving a result of 2.5/3 this time. Also, special mention goes to Priyansh, who scored 2/3 and second place on his Super Saturday debut. Priyansh did not lose a single game. Anyway, what a streak for Ricnesh - super work!

In Over 1000 Section 2, the victor was Philip with a perfect 3 wins in his 3 games. In his games, Philip played well in the opening, gaining advantages, and then converted those advantages into wins in various ways: it could be a difficult endgame or a checkmate combination in the middlegame. Great job Philip!

In Over 1000 Section 3, Arnav came out on top with 2.5 points. He played all his games brilliantly, and sometimes found very surprising combinations. One example is in his game against Mark, where it was a rook and two knights against a rook. Many players would have pushed for a bigger advantage, but Arnav found a nice mate for our game of the week, which you can see here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/18467495823. Well played Arnav!

In Under 1000 Section 1, Christine started off her Quads career by winning her tournament with 2.5/3. It was a great performance from her on her first time playing, as she won two tough games in a row with black to only need a draw in the final round to clinch the outright victory. So, congrats Christine!

In Under 1000 Section 2, we had a crazy tournament with many ups and downs, and some technical problems. However, all games were played in the end, and the winner was Vivek with 2.5 points. He played some interesting chess, for example employing the lesser spotted Englund Gambit (1.d4 e5), to great effect. Congratulations to Vivek!

In Under 1000 Section 3, the tournament was Yujeong’s. He had 3 wins out of 3 and played extremely well. He used a lot of different tactics to gain the advantage, especially tricky-to-spot little pawn moves like pawn forks and pawn pins. Amazing job Yujeong!

In Under 1000 Section 4, the winner was Yuxin with a perfect score. In his games, Yuxin demonstrated great skills when on the attack, winning all his games in just 31 moves or less. It was a well-deserved result after a great overall performance. Excellent work Yuxin!

In Under 1000 Section 5, Juno returned to tournament chess by playing in his first Super Saturday Quads, and he won with 2.5/3, finishing just .5 ahead of second-placed Justin. Hopefully, this will be the start of a great career with us - congratulations to Juno!

In Under 1000 Section 6, the tournament ended in a tie between two players, Aarav G and Sarthi. For Aarav, at least a tie for first was ensured after two great wins to start off the tournament. Sarthi suffered a defeat to Aarav in the first round but bounced back wonderfully to win the other two games, showing excellent resilience. Both players finished with 2 points - great job!
