July 24Th, 2021 Quads Report

On July 24th, we welcomed players back for another Super Saturday Quads. This week we had 8 sections, and 10 winners!

Thanks to all the players, and especially our new players Aadit, Sophie, Ananya, Varun, Darren, Saunak, Andrew, Sathvik, Cole, and Shiv for joining us this week. Now into the games.

In Over 1000 Section 1

There was a two-way tie for first place with newcomers, Aadit and Cole, with 2 out of 3 points. Aadit started out with a first-round loss but played hard to win his next two games. In the last round he played Cole and won with the Sicilian Dragon. In a classic opposite side castle game taitai’s piece coordination proved to be too much to handle, and he won in very nice fashion. With the nice win he earns the well-deserved game of the week. You can check out that game right here. https://www.chess.com/game/live/20894414675. Cpriv89, also had a very nice win in round 2, where a tactical find to win a pawn changed the course of the game. Overall, great fighting spirit, and well deserved wins!.

In Over 1000 Section 2

In Section 2, we had a clear winner Vivek, with a score of 2.5/3. In his last round he had a decisive result that guaranteed winning the section. In a normal Ruy Lopez he found many tactical shots that led to lost material. After gaining material he won swiftly. Another very good game was Round 2 when Geoffrey won a very good pawn ending putting his opponent in Zugzwang. A very nice ending, that you can check here, https://www.chess.com/game/live/20891460673

In Over 1000 Section 3

In Section 3 it was very tight, but Mark came out on top with 2/3 points. After losing his first round, he did not give up and managed to win the next two games. In his last round, after blundering his rook, he did not give up and he set a tactic to win his opponent’s queen, and subsequently win the game. Everyone in this section fought very hard to the end.

Great Games and even better fighting Spirit!

In Under 1000 Section 1

In this section, newcomers Saunak and Sophie tied for first place with 2/3 points. Saunak lost his first game but bounced back and won the next two. In his last game against Sophie, he got two pieces for a rook, and was able to convert the extra material into a winning endgame. In Round 2, Sophie was down a pawn, but had the bishop pair. She continuously pushed, and eventually won the game. Great Games!

In Under 1000 Section 2

In this section, Christian won clear first place with 2.5/3 points. In Round 2, he played a London System where all his pieces were working together. He won a pawn in the opening, and that pawn proved to be decisive.

In Under 1000 Section 3

In this section newcomer, Ananya won with 2.5/3 points. In her last round she won a piece very quickly, and then converted it to a full point. She showed that piece activity and coordination can win games very quickly.

In Under 1000 Section 4

There was a clear winner, Hovannnes with a perfect score of 3/3. In his last game, he won very quickly out of the Scotch. He set up a very typical attack on the f7 square with his bishop and queen, and subsequently won after. Also, in round 2 he had a very nice tactical shot and won the queen quickly. Very Interesting and Energetic Games!

In Under 1000 Section 5

There was a clear winner with 3/3 points, Achyut. In his last game, he lost a piece very early in the opening. He did not give up and continued fighting. After lifting his rook, he made many checkmate threats and his opponent eventually messed up. Great Job, and this shows you should never give up.
