July 31St, 2021 Quads Report

On July 31st, we welcomed players back for another edition of the Super Saturday Quads! This week we had 9 sections and 14 winners. Special praise goes to Aiden and Mark, who have attended our camps all summer and crushed their sections with perfect scores

Thanks to all the players that joined us again, and especially to our new players Bashir, Imad, Aaron, Eiaa, Lucas, Mason, Ethan, Joshua, and Anish. Now into the games.

In Over 1000 Section 1

Phillip won with a perfect score of 3/3. He played very nice English with white. In that game, he got doubled pawns very early in exchange for the bishop pair. The bishop pair and the extra pawn in the center proved to be a minimal advantage that eventually became larger. With a lot of grinding, he was able to win the material and then win the game. Great Job.

In Over 1000 Section 2

Aiden won the section again with a perfect score of 3/3. In his last round he played the exciting Smith Morra Gambit against the Sicilian. After winning his pawn back very swiftly he had a beautiful set up with pawns on e4, d4 and bishops on c4 and f4. With so much space, Aiden eventually squeezed his opponent and won his game. Great Game!

In Over 1000 Section 3

Newcomer Imad won the section clearly with a clean 2.5/3 points. In his first game, he played a great Exchange French, where he found many tactical gems. After winning material rather quickly he was able to convert it to the full point. His game was played very well, and he hardly made any mistakes. With such great play he wins this week`s game of the week. Feel free to check the game here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/21491472097

In Over 1000 Section 4

Mark won the section clearly with a perfect score of 3/3. In his last game, he was not playing around and won a very nice tactical game. With gained tempos in the opening, he punished his opponent for moving the same piece too many times. After winning material very quickly he was able to kill any chances for counterplay and won his game. Wonderful Game!

In Under 1000 Section 1

We had a total of 4 winners in a 6-person swiss with a total score of 2/3 points. Our 4 winners were Alvin, Lucas, Daniel and newcomer Eiaa. In the last game Daniel played Alvin. Daniel in a must win situation played a very aggressive Italian with black. Taking advantage of his opponent’s weak back rank, Daniel won the last game to tie for first. In the other, Eiaa and Lucas both won their last games to join the winners with 2 points as well. Congrats on the results and even better fighting spirit.

In Under 1000 Section 2

Ido, Mason, and Yuxin tied for first with two point each in this hotly contested section. Everyone had some interesting games, such as Ido’s victory with two knights vs. rook imbalance in the endgame and Mason’s middlegame attack against Ido that netted him a quick victory. Congratulations to all the winners!

In Under 1000 Section 3

In this section Sarthi won with a perfect score of 3/3. In his last game, he actually lost a piece very early on in the game. However, he did not give up and persisted to make threats. His constant fighting was rewarded as his opponent returned the favor and blundered a piece. He went onto win his game, with extra pawns in an ending.

In Under 1000 Section 4

Newcomer Ethan won with a total score of 3/3 points. In his last game, he played black and there was opposite side castling. Ethan brought his queen and made very annoying threats which ended up in him winning material. After he won material, he converted the position very easily and won. Great Job!

In Under 1000 Section 5

Devam crushed his section this week. He dispatched Kai in just 12 moves and made quick work of Anish, too. Edward put up the staunchest resistance. The advantage bounced back and forth, and by the end of the game both kings were dragged into the middle of the board. Just as Edward threatened a mate-in-one, Devam strung together a four-move combination of checks to finish him off
