September 18Th, 2021 Quads Report

Last week we welcomed back players to our Super Saturday Quads on September 18! As always, a big thank you everybody who played! And a special thank you to our first-time participants: Sanvi, Vishal, and Sahana! Let’s look at the highlights:

In Over 1000 Section 1, the tournament was very tight, but in the end, Nguyen won out with 2.5 points. He finished just .5 points ahead of second-placed Aiden. In his first two games, Nguyen achieved two excellent victories, thanks to great positional play. As a result, all he had to do to win the tournament was hold Aiden to a draw, something that he pulled off. Nicely done Nguyen!

In Over 1000 Section 2, Grayson put in a great performance to win the tournament for the second week in a row. In his games, he continued to play very exciting chess, and this produced exciting games overall. One example is his game against Mark, which had a lot of crazy tactics which both players had to have calculated out. You can see the game here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/25725064559. Anyway, excellent work Grayson!

In Over 1000 Section 3, Sophia won the section with a perfect score. All the games ended up being Italian, which clearly suited her well, because she showed repeatedly that she understood the positions and knew what to do to gain an advantage. Well, done Sophia!

In Under 1000 Section 1, Edward won the section with the full 3 points. This represented his second tournament victory in a row, as he had also won last week. Hopefully this will be the foundation of a great streak, thanks to Edward’s consistent and excellent play. Congratulations!

In Under 1000 Section 2, the tournament was Christian’s. He stormed to victory because he was able to spot difficult checkmates in crucial moments. For example, in his first game he found one in an otherwise drawn endgame, while in his last he found a mate in two right out of the opening. Nice job Christian!

In Under 1000 Section 3, the tournament was exciting and close until the last round. The winner ended up being Andrew with 2.5/3, with Avyay close behind with 2/3. On this occasion, one tactic that really helped Andrew was the fork. In both games that he won, he stayed alert to notice a king-and-rook fork and win the exchange. Congrats Andrew!

In Under 1000 Section 4, Achyut was unstoppable with 3 points. After the resolution of some technical difficulties, he went on to win his games in great style. In many games, he was helped by his opening skills, because they allowed him to get a rapid advantage to turn into a victory. Great work Achyut!
