September 25Th, 2021 Quads Report

Last week we welcomed back players to our Super Saturday Quads on September 25th! A big thank you to everybody who came to play! And a special thank you to Arjun: it was his first time playing with us. Let’s look at the highlights:

In Over 1000 Section 1, the tournament was Philip’s, as he won all 3 games. He played very well in all parts of the game, but especially in the late middlegame to endgame, where his excellent skills shone through, and he was able to overcome his opponents. Nicely done Philip!

In Over 1000 Section 2, we had an extra-large tournament of 6 players, which consequently had extra prizes. And we witnessed something that was basically unheard of, and exceptionally rare: a 4-way tie for first! Believe it or not, Grayson, Sophia, Mark, and Geoffrey all finished with 2/3, and nobody was able to make it out unbeaten, displaying how balanced this large section ended up. Amazing job to all!

In Under 1000 Section 1, Varun was the victor with 3/3 points. He was truly dominant in his games because he played excellently, expertly taking advantage of any mistake from his opponents. This led him to often having a huge material advantage, which he converted into the win. Congratulations Varun!

In Under 1000 Section 2, the tournament was tight from beginning to end. Going into the last round, Andrew and Noam had 1.5 points, and were tied for first. After three games, when the dust had settled, it was Juno who had won with 2 points! Indeed, Juno had lost his first game due to an unfortunate blunder but showed incredible resilience and mentality to not let that affect his next two games. Well done Juno!

In Under 1000 Section 3, Evalina triumphed with a perfect score. In her games, she played many crazy combinations, including some nice checkmate combos that ended the game. One game that stands out is her game against Achyut, our game of the week. It included a very fun mess of tactics and combinations in the middlegame. You can see it here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/26329874623. Good work Evalina!

In Under 1000 Section 4, the victory was shared between Sean and Devam, as they both finished with 2.5 points. When it was time for them to play each other in the second round, the game was a wild one settled surprisingly by a draw by repetition. Overall, they played some excellent chess: great job to both players!
