Today we celebrate yet another milestone from our students! One of our brightest stars, Gary Leschinsky, crossed the 2200 rating mark this weekend with an impressive performance at the Eastern Chess Congress! During this 5-round event, Gary crossed paths with multiple titled players, including one Grandmaster! (Andrew Tang). Gary had a very picturesque sacrifice and was able to show off his tactical ability against one of the strongest players in the country! Late in his exciting game vs GM Tang, Gary utilized a queen sacrifice to take the advantage in the game (pictured below). |

Although Gary pushed as hard as possible for a win, ultimately the game resulted in a draw. With a crowd of people watching the resolution of the match, there was no shortage of witnesses to Gary`s impressive result. GM Tang went on to tie for winning the tournament with a score of 4.5/5 points. Gary was the only player in the entire tournament to take points off him! In addition to his draw with GM Tang, Gary also defeated two Fide Masters and scored another draw versus IM Zlotnikov! With these exciting results, Gary starts his own path up the ladder of titled play. With him crossing the first barrier to be a titled player, we`re excited to continue to see Gary`s progression! We want to commend Gary on his tireless efforts towards his lessons and his chess game. For years, Gary has taken classes at ICA and participated in tournaments regularly. With countless hours of study devoted to improving, we`d like to encourage other students to learn from his example! We`re glad that Gary chose our school to assist him in his journey and that we`ve been able to help him on his way. According to Gary`s father, the "ICA School of chess rocks!" As we write this article, we have no doubt that there will be many more to come and anticipate plenty more greatness for Gary Leschinsky. Congratulations Gary and be proud! In addition to Gary`s accomplishment, we also wanted to recognize the efforts of two of our other students! Ethan Modi and Aiden Kennedy both were also present at the Eastern Chess Congress, and both also put up very impressive finishes! Ethan, playing in the open section of the tournament, scored 3.5/5 in a section with multiple GM`s and other titled players. Ethan`s performance earned him a tie for 6th place overall and 2nd place for the U2300 class prize! This latest finish brings Ethan to 2130 USCF and edges him closer to master level! Aiden, playing in the U1300 section, scored 4/5 points. His only loss was to the eventual tournament winner in the final round! Aiden went into the last round with a perfect 4/4 score and was matched with a player (Daniel Goldovsky) two hundred rating points above him. Although fighting hard for the perfect score, Aiden eventually ended in a tie for 3rd place overall and earned himself over one hundred rating points in the process! This brings Aiden up to 1251 USCF. Well, done Aiden! |
