2021 Online Supersaturday quads October 16th Reports

We hosted our weekly quads once again on October 16. This week we had 14 players and four winners. Let’s see how the sections played out.

In Over 1000 Section 1

In the top section, Mark and Alex tied for first by drawing each other and beating the other participants. Their draw was a fierce face-off in the Sicilian Dragon. They castled on opposite sides, but the queens came off shortly afterward, so neither player could muster much of an attack. They traded down to a knight and pawn endgame and then made a draw by repetition when Mark’s knight came too close to infiltrating Alex’s position, forcing him to chase it back and forth with his king. This exciting contest was our game of the week: https://www.chess.com/game/live/28146593071

In Under 1000 Section 1 Varun came out on top in the second section with a perfect score. He beat Juno with a solid Slav Defense, pulled victory from the jaws of defeat against Christian, and finished off his perfect run with a quiet victory against David. His sharp tactical play kept him in every game even when things looked dire and allowed him to claim the win this week.

In Under 1000 Section 2 Longtime quads competitors Andy and Hovannes split the top honors in this section with 2.5 points apiece. Both players took down two of the other four competitors in this six-person swiss section. In their game against each other, Hovannes picked up an extra piece in the middle game, but Andy kept fighting despite the deficit and navigated his way to a stalemate to save half a point. Commendations also go to Shreyan, who got 1.5 out of 3 in his first virtual quads outing.

We hope to see you again next week for another quad’s tournament, either in-person or online!
