2021 Online Supersaturday Quads October 23Rd Reports

We hosted our weekly quads once again on October 16. This week we had 22 players and five winners. Special thanks to our new players: Sahana, Paarth, and Ayaan. Let’s see who came out on top this week.

In Over 1000 Section 1 Phillip and Alex both started by soundly beating two opponents before meeting in the third round to decide the tournament. Alex played the game of the week on his way there against Nguyen in round two. The game was a sharp Scotch battle. The players castled on opposite sides and set up strong pawn storms. Nguyen had a bigger pawn front, but Alex broke through first, and a 15-move king hunt ensued that ended with Nguyen’s king checkmated on a6. Check that super exciting game out here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/28751976799. After that battle, Philip used savvy tactics to checkmate his opponent in the middlegame and win the tournament.

In Over 1000 Section 2 Mark continued his winning ways this week with another perfect victory. He showed his range by grinding Peter out in the endgame and making quick work of Geoffrey with some middlegame tactics. Varun, his toughest competition, managed to keep the game even the whole way through, but Mark found a mating net in a heavy piece ending to emerge victorious.

In Under 1000 Section 1 Paarth made his quads debut in dominant fashion this week. He went three for three and made good use of the solid London system in his games as Black. He played reasonable moves and waited for his opponents to make mistakes. In each game, he eventually won an extra piece, which he then cleanly converted into a win.

In Under 1000 Section 2 Quads mainstay Achyut ran away with his section this week by scoring twice as many points as anyone else. He did have a scare against Sarthak, who won a queen early in the game. Despite this, he persevered and managed to first win back his queen and then coordinate his pieces in order to force off the opposition’s defenders and win in the endgame. Its always nice to see perseverance pay off!

In Under 1000 Section 3 Sahana rounded out the winners this week with yet another perfect score. She showed her opponents no mercy and delivered them all checkmate as soon as she could. She used knight and queen, knight and rook, and bishop and queen helper mates to sweep the section.

We hope to see you again next week for another quad’s tournament, either in-person or online!
