Today, despite the fact that lots of our frequent players were playing at the K-12 Nationals in Maryland, we were still able to get 42 participants! Those participants were split into 10 sections, with Section 3 being played as a Swiss.
For today’s tournament, we awarded two “Players of the Tournament”! The first player of the tournament is Angelo Valentino, who had an outstanding performance with 3 points in Section 1! Although he was the second lowest rated in his section, he didn’t let that get to him and still played elegantly. In his final game to claim his prize, Angelo’s opponent was playing very aggressively. Angelo, on the other hand, did not let that opportunity go to waste, and found an amazing tactic to trap his opponent's knight. The rest was history. With the next edition of the ICA Open occurring next week, let's see how Angelo will perform against a higher quality of opposition!
The other player of the tournament is Saveley Lopez, who obtained 2.5/3 points in Section 2! Going into the third round with 2/2 points, Staveley quickly realized that he could get first place simply by drawing. Knowing this, he played his third game against Jane Stripunsky very passively, and both soon agreed to a draw.
In addition, we had a very rare occurrence in Section 5; everyone tied for first place (although this occurrence also occurred last week; what are the chances of that happening!) The highlight in that section came in our first game, where Anderson Schafer managed to scrap a draw against Johnathan Pollizi. From a quick glance at the position, it seemed as if Jonathan was winning, as he had more material. However, Anderson played the last few moves perfectly and managed to get himself a draw.
