June 24, 2023 Report For Glen Rock Quads

It’s Quad weekend at the International Chess Academy.  Two tournaments - today in Glen Rock and tomorrow in Livingston - with groups of four players all competing against each other for a cash prize.

Like all quad events, there were lots of interesting moments both on and off the board.  Dylan Somertz, for example, came fresh off a perfect score at an unrated ICA Summer Chess Camp tournament to win Quad 10 in his first rated tournament 3-0.  It’s a motivating start for what we hope will be a long and impressive life in chess.

Quad 14 featured the “Battle of the Sophias”, with Sophia Abadir and Sophia Itkin duking it out with fellow chessplayers Justin Hyun and Matthew Kanounov.  Sophia Abadir won against Sophia Itkin in round one in what became an unbeatable streak leading to a 3-0 ending and a $60 cash prize for Ms. Abadir.

We almost had a battle of the siblings in one of the high quads with twins Benjamin Nunez and Santiago Nunez being split across Quads 3 and 4.  Alas, this was not to be.  Although both played well in their respective quads with some memorable gameplay for their opponents.

Regardless of the quad and the individual story, in the end there were champions who went home with prizes.  The final winners list is…

Quad 1 - Yefim Treger
Quad 2 - Juno Moon
Quad 3 - Abhay Raina
Quad 4 - Ely Aminetzah
Quad 5 - Tyler Angelov
Quad 6 - Saanvi Ganesh and Rishith Bhoopathi (tie)
Quad 7 - Ansh Shamdasani
Quad 8 - Blake Chang
Quad 9 - JudeMcCullough

Quad 11 - Andres Maldonado and Dylan Tsui (tie)
Quad 12 - Pranav Aggarwal
