Glen Rock Summer Camp Week 2 Report

Glen Rock Summer Camp Week 2 Report

Week 2 at Glen Rock was another fun week of camp. We did get a little wet (ok very wet) one day, but the rain did not stop us from having a good time, even if the Canadian fires kept us inside for most of Friday.

Throughout the week, campers worked hard to improve their chess, while competing for an array of prizes, and engaging in other fun activities.

We started the morning with three rounds of Circle of Doom – and this week’s winner was Kate, with two wins! After Circle of Doom, campers broke off into chess groups with their assigned coach, where they analyzed games, solved puzzles, and developed their strategic, tactical, positional, and psychological intuition.

The winner for best in groups were Aiden for GM Alex; Ari for Coach Vitaly; Rayan for Coach Sean; Noah for Coach Alan; Novak for Coach Chris; Sonia for Coach Eugene; Jayden for Coach Albert.

In Coach Sean’s group, campers were challenged to memorize a 30+ move GM game and boy did they deliver! Great choices included Fischer’s game of the century, Kasparov’s immortal game, Firouzja- Nakamura 2022 Candidates, Esserman-Stripunsky 2009, Janowski-Capablanca 1916 and more. Jack won the memory prize, one of the several campers to surprise the class with a bonus game!

After morning lessons, campers went back outside and broke into sport groups by age, before combining for a larger game of dodgeball (or playground). The winners for best in sports groups were: Michael for 2009-2011; Nicholas for 2011-2012; Blake for 2013-2014; Kian for 2015; Zakharii for 2016; Sophia for 2016-2017.

The dodgeball winners were Kian and Jack.

After running around for a bit, campers went back inside for lunch. The winner for Thursday Healthy Lunch was Jacob.

After lunch was the tournament – one of the most important parts of the day! Coaches often analyzed these games during lessons, and newer players had a chance to practice notating. Tournament winners were Ido for Section 1; Rayan and Kate for Section 2; Blake for Section 3; Ean for Section 4; Matthias for Section 5; Lucas for GM 1; Isaac for GM 2.

The Blitz-Bughouse winners were Kate and Emma. The winners for the rain-day Blitz were Emma, Ido and Leon.

After the tournament, campers had the option of competing in the coach simul, solving puzzles, or art.

The winners for simul survival were Blake (with a win) and Purab, who fought hard and lasted a very long time.

The problem-solving winner was Aryan, who worked hard consistently to improve his tactics.

The winners for Art were Sonia and Sam V, who made cool paintings, bookmarks, and other works of art.

Campers had a lot of fun doing mind games with Coach Jonathan, and Stella was the big winner this week.

The winners for Math with Eugene were Nick and Jack.

It was fun to see so many campers return, and we can’t wait for week 3!
