Livingston Camp Report Week 1

The summer is almost over, but we’re getting in every bit of chess we can at Do Re Mi.

Every morning we warmed up with a few rounds of “circle of doom.” The winner at the end of the week was Aadya with the most wins.

After our morning warmup, we broke into different groups with our assigned coaches, divided by level and ages. We reviewed grandmaster games, coach games, camper games, and solved tactics. The winners for best in group were: Ben with Coach Sean; Dylan with Coach Max; Reeva with Coach Vedanta; and Surabhi with Coach Artem.

After morning lessons, we went back outside for sports. Campers played a little dodgeball the first day, but Capture the Flag soon was the camp favorite, and it was Agastya who claimed the Capture the Flag prize.

After sports we had lunch, followed by our tournament games. The tournament is of course a great chance to practice everything we’ve been learning, as well as good material for the coaches to review during the lessons as we learn from our mistakes. The tournament winner for Section 1 was Greyson; Section 2 was a tie between Liam and Brian, but Liam won the playoff match. Section 3 the winners were Sasha in first and Zulu in second.

After the tournament, campers had options between more chess, arts & crafts, puzzle solving, simul, and more.

Friday tournament was blitz-bughouse. The winners in the advanced section were Dhrish and Teddy. The winners in the beginner section were Kasie and Artem.

Although no campers beat a coach during the simul, Ben won the simul prize for surviving the longest (and he did upset a coach or two in blitz games!).

The winners for Arts & Crafts were Alex and Shiv. Liam also deserves an honorable mention, as he and Alex worked hard together on a wonderful chess comic. Shiv was the master craftsmen this week, creating a whole fleet of planes.

We had a blast and we are looking forward to seeing everyone back soon, whether for our last week of camp, our fall classes, or tournaments!
