Knight and Day: September 16, 2023, Glen Rock Quads Report

SECTION 4 REPORT PART 1, by Yuvantika Uma

Hello, my name is Yuvantika and I have been playing in Glen Rock for a while now. I am originally from India and have played over 400 games and 60+ tournaments with girls my age. I usually don't play open games, but I found ICA's tournaments to be unique, especially the quad tournaments. I decided to join one and found it interesting, so I started coming here more often. During these tournaments, I learned many new things such as new openings and strategies that I used in rounds and tournaments. In the tournament I played yesterday, I got 2 points out of 3 rounds and placed second. Every time I play in this tournament, I can focus and improve, which has increased my rating. I come from Iselin, New Jersey which is 35 miles from here but that distance is nothing compared to how much I love this tournament. I observed that individuals of different ages take part in the Glen Rock tournament, showing that chess goes beyond age limits and I feel that everyone who plays in this tournament enjoys it.

SECTION 4 REPORT PART 2, by Rayan Zarineh

My name is Rayan and I played in the ICA quads Section 4. I got two and a half points out of three and I was delighted with my result that day! In my section there were 4 players: Liam, Yuvantika, Justin and myself. That was a diverse group of players. I have played them before as well. I got first place in my section.

I’d like to show you my last game against Liam because it was a really splendid game! As usual, I played the Italian opening and got a good position from the start. From then on, I was set for a good attack, and to my delight, he blundered and I could have won a free piece! Unfortunately, I missed it, but I still had a good onset and I could have lost when I blundered. But he missed it and I kept pressuring his king and I won a rook and we also traded queens. He tried to make an attack but it was useless. Given the fact that he was down a rook and a pawn, there was no way he could have caught up or won the game. It was a 41 move game.

The other 2 games I played ended up with a draw and a win. In my first game, I drew and I was up a piece. And in my second game, I played Yuvantika. Even though she was winning, at some lucky moment she blundered and I took advantage of it and I won a piece.

I had a very good tournament. I am very happy with the result and plan on coming to the next tournament! To add to my victory my brother Kian has won his section 2 and we brought 2 wins home and both of our ratings have hit their all time highs!

SECTION 1 REPORT by Yefim Treger

Hello again. My name is Yefim Treger. I am a knight tamer. That means in a chess game I prefer a bishop (in Russian - “elephant”) over a knight (a horse). Today I played a very difficult game where I managed to tame the opponent’s knights-horses. Yet my young opponent played very good almost all the time, so I still do not know for sure where he had seriously erred. See this game with my comments below.
