2024-2025 Scholastic School Year In Livingston

Welcome to the Do-Re-Mi School of Music and the Arts in Livingston! Through our collaborative partnership, ICA chess education is able to thrive in Livingston with chess lessons offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

What truly makes the ICA unique is our distinguished instructors, each drawing on their own distinctive teaching styles and mastery of chess to create an engaging environment conducive to student learning. Coaches Sean Finn, Max Farberov, and Michael Patrucker are all dynamic chess instructors with a wealth of experience teaching chess in an engaging, fun, and illuminating way.

Student Levels

At Livingston, class levels are slightly different from our other classes. Placement for Intermediate levels and higher are based on a student's USCF rating:

  • Intermediate 1: 500-799

  • Advanced: 800-999

  • Advanced: 1000+

If your child does not fall into any of the above categories, please fill out this form to receive further information on their placement!

Class Structure

Rather than a three semester structure, Livingston employs a full school year program. Students can register at any time throughout the year. Payments occur automatically monthly and students are able to leave the program with a 30-day advanced notice.

After the majority of a particular class completes the curriculum for their current skill level, students are promoted to learning more advanced material, ensuring a continuous educational progression. The Certificate of Completion will be issued when each level's requirements are fulfilled. If a student's abilities are significantly above or below that of their current class, they will be offered to transfer to a better fitting group.

Friday Game Sessions

We offer unrated game sessions Fridays at 6pm for only $50/month. Younger players are recommended to come for one hour intervals of either 6:00-7:00 or 7:00-8:00. Older players are recommended to come for two hours between 6:00-8:00. Participants will get the chance to play several matches against other students and apply the strategies and ideas that they learned during classes.
