2009 ICA Summer Camp Week 5

ICA Summer Camp Week 5

\"\"

The summer is disappearing fast!! It seems only yesterday that our first camper walked in the front door, and now we know everyone as if we were old friends. With almost 40 campers again this coming week, we continue to build momentum toward the finish of a great summer camp. We again saw many competitive events with fierce competition and some very close ties. The greatest thing to see is that there are different winners each week, so everyone is getting the chance to win a “piece of the pie”!!!

Tournament Results

Section 1
                              USCF Rated Results

Kiernan McVay was the topper this week, with a near perfect score of 4.5 out of 5, besting David Shekhtman, the clear favorite who won week #2 and week #4 in the last five weeks. Kiernan gained 60 points in rating! Was this a fluke, or will Kiernan be back to defend his crown?

Section 2                              USCF Rated Results

Michael Finkel rose to the challenge this week and defeated last week’s co-winner Gilad Drillich with a strong showing of 7.5 out of ten points. Also of note was the strong performance of the up-and-coming Hillel Koslowe, (5 out of 10) the underdog of the section, rated 232+ points below Drillich, the top rated player in the section.

Section 3                              USCF Rated Results

With a perfect score of 10 out of 10, Joshua “the Encyclopedia of Openings” Katz destroyed the field. Does Joshua know the “Hedge Hog”? Will we some day see the “Katz Gambit”?

Section 4                              Results

In a close battle this week, Haik Der Manuelian narrowly defeated Preston Wang by half a point with a score of 8.5 out of 10. Could the half point loss be due to the fact that Preston keeps forgetting to take home his score book? Hmmm……

Section 5                              Results

The fiercest competition this week was between 1st place winners Zachary Manlowitz and Jonathan Anbazo. Both players showed great improvement this week and the results of their hard work were clearly evident.
