2012 ICA Summer Chess Camp Fair Lawn Week Three Report (7/9 – 7/13)
In connection with the opening of GM Camp, Day Camp changed the deployment, climbing to a new location: 4-17 Saddle River Road (right outside of the Park). The move has deprived our students of opportunities to compete for the “Swag Walker” prize, but added a new option: at the end of the work day students could rejuvenate with a game of dodgeball. In general, Week 3 dodgeball was the most popular of sports activities, significantly ahead of the soccer. If the trend continue, it would be necessary to consider abolishing a Soccer Winner, and add the additional prize for senior players in dogeball, since they, being larger targets, give a significant head start to smart kids who deftly hide behind senior companions ...
But seriously speaking, many students have worked brilliantly – not only on dodge ball fields, but mainly on the chess fields.
In competitions for ‘Best in Chess Groups’:
In Tanya’s group Daniel Khaitov clinched victory with a clear advantage. In Hana’s group, on the contrary, there was persistent struggle, and even ‘photo finish’ did not reveal the winner: Sarah and Stephen shared the Victory. Alex became the best in Genry’s , Sasha in Eve’s , and Rachel in Ilya’s . Rachel also has earned the prize for ‘Best Chess Notation’. And Alex has traditionally won the prize: ‘Home Work Winner’. In addition, Alex managed to snatch a last minute victory (away from Aaron) in the nomination ‘Survival in a Simul’ (Unrated Section), lasting 40 moves against Max Y. In the rated Section in this nomination confidently won Anthony, who made 53 moves against Eve.
Eric Z, as in Week 1, was best in ‘Problem Solving Competition’ (Unrated section) and in Rated Section there was persistent struggle for this prize between Daniel Khaitov, David and Nicole. Eventually Nicole has managed a last-minute break away from the pursuers and finished first.
Dedicated subscribers to our site might wonder: why, two-time winner Yisrael Moshe did not join the fight for this prize? The answer is simple: he was busy winning the tournament! Yisrael Moshe won Section 3, scoring 4.5 out of 6 (half a point ahead of Sarah). In Section 2, no one could think about competition for Anthony, who scored 2.5 points out of 3 and for such a short distance a point ahead of the nearest pursuer! In Section 4, by contrast, three athletes finished with the same result – 3 out of 4. Additional indicators put them in the following order: 1st – Aaron, 2nd – Daniel S, 3rd - Michael
Our most fun chess event-Team Championship- Nicole’s team won! Team members: Nicole (captain), Eric T., Michael and Alex.
Nicole and Eric T, - together with Aaron, Eric Z, and Yisrael Moshe (Max’s team), - also won the most fun sport competition: Relay Races!

Daniel K. confirmed the reputation of an excellent athlete, winning competition in Dodgeball. As already mentioned, the soccer this week was not very popular. However, the dedication to this game by Eric Z. was rewarded – he received a ‘Prize Winner of the Soccer’.
David was a bit unlucky: he tried very hard, but was slightly inferior to his competitors in both chess, and sports. But his efforts has not gone unnoticed: David won in the category Best Effort.
In ‘Thursdays’ Healthy Competition’ authoritative jury awarded first place to Zoe.
2nd week in a row, we celebrate Birthdays: Etic T celebrated his 10th year anniversary by treating everyone at camp (including coaches!) with sweets! On week’s closing ceremony he was awarded with a special ‘Birthday Boy’ prize.
In the category Art Contest won by Michael, who made an excellent helmet. However, other craftsmen under the direction of art teacher, Jeff, demonstrated a high class work as well - judge for yourself
Yisrael Moshe, who sang the national anthem of our camp, accompanying himself on piano (thanks to music teacher Michael), received the ‘Music Award’
And all the students and coaches gladly joined in singing: "O, chess is my game, and chess is your game ..."
