2012 ICA Summer Chess Camp Week Three Teaneck Report

2012 ICA Summer Chess Camp Week Three Teaneck Report

Week three was unique because in an effort to spice up the awesome fun that is dodgeball it was decided to add the element of musical fun to it.  Nicknamed the “’blank’ special” one of the games in the daily dodgeball competition would include the coaches playing a popular melody, or theme song from a cartoon, and awarding extra dodgeball points to the player who can throw the ball in a particular manner (ideally emulating the cartoon, video game, or movie character) while proclaiming a famous phrase from the same video game, movie, or cartoon.

On Monday the special was the Ken theme from Street Fighter (a popular video game for parents not in the know).  In order to receive the special dodgeball point the players had to fling the ball the way Ken shoots his fireball, while yelling Hadouken. The Tuesday special was the Guile theme from the same video game (the special phrase was “Sonic Boom”), while on Wednesday the special was the Bison theme from the same game (the phrase being “I will crush you”).  On Thursday the special was Darth Vader’s theme with the phrase being “Luke I am your Father.”  Friday’s theme to the delight of all our female players and students was the “Care Bears” where the players had to shout, “Sharing is Caring,” to get the dodgeball point.

The winner of all this intense dodgeball mayhem was the adorable Alex Belov who spontaneously added random dance moves regardless of if the music was playing or not.

The winners in the regular chess tournament were: Emre in section one, with Idan second, and Brian third, Jaiden in section two, and Rebecca in section three.

The best students in each group were: Sophie Rasol, and Nick Belov in Slava’s group, Brian Hong in Frank’s group, Vito in Arjun’s group, Ethan in Boris’s group, and Ariel and Lily in Ivette’s group.

The winners in sports were (in order from youngest to oldest) Jaiden, Rebecca, James, Emre, and Douglas.

Idan participated in all the simul events and was the winner for that prize.  He was also the leader of the relay race winning “Pretty Pink Unicorns ( Captain: Idan, teammates Alex, Daniel, and Rebecca), as well as the captain of the blitz/bughouse winning team the name of which escapes me at the moment (Captain: Idan, Charli, Daniel, and Jaiden).

Charli took home the healthy lunch prize for her oh so good for you “sushi” platter.
