2012 ICA Summer Chess Camp Fair Lawn Week 4 Report (7/16 – 7/20)
The number of students, who took part in all of our camps (including GM and Master Camp) this week, was an impressive number - 77. Fair Lawn Day Camp could not stay away from this event: we had a lot of new students and that increased competition in the fight for prizes in numerous categories.
Daniel Khaitov won Section 2 in the decisive game of the last round. The game was played in the good positional style and ended in beautiful direct attack on the King. Daniel received a special prize for creativity!
In Section 3 the first place took the usual Yisrael Moshe, who gave away only half a point in four games that he played!
Vidur won also rated Section 4. The largest in the tournament was Section 5 – 9 participants. In spite the fact that there were 7 games, the championship was split between Camp ‘veteran’ Michael Y and Camp ‘rookie’ Gabriel. Joshua F finished third.

The most stubborn resistance the Survival in a Simul Competition showed Anthony, -53 moves. In the Unrated Section of this category Jeremy became the most resilient – 24 moves. By mistake, this prize was awarded to another student. We sincerely apologize to Jeremy and at the earliest opportunity will give him a well-deserved award.
Due to the large number of competitors we added one more prize in a Problem Solving Competition by separating the rated Section into two groups: over 1000 and less than 1000. Funny that the absolute champion here came from the second group: Maurice selflessly fought all week with difficult chess problems and was able to score 5 points more than Joshua L., who became best in the more than 1000 category. It must be said that this week\`s Problem Solving Competition was very popular, but mostly among members of the rated Section. Some experienced old-timers of our camp decided to earn prizes in Unrated Section without much effort: solved two puzzles and without competition from fellow students – stopped... Of course, this attitude was not welcomed, therefore, the prize intended for the unrated Section, went to Malina: her diligence in solving chess problems was in reverse proportion to her low rating!
Friday’s Team Championship was won by team ‘Chess Maters’: Michael A (captain), Maurice, Conan, Sasha and Rachel. Normally teams in this competition consist of four players, but because the camp had 21 students this week, one of the teams received alternate player: Sasha and Rachel played in turn. Judging by the result, this innovation has benefited Chess Maters!
Prize for ‘Best Chess Notation’ went to Isaac, and Best Effort award went to Greg P. I must say that Greg really tried hard all week, but everywhere he lacked a little luck. It happens sometimes…
Surprisingly but not for the first time the prize for ‘Best in Homework’ stayed ‘home’. In anticipation of the next week we would like to remind our students: please contact your coaches and ask them for homework. And after receiving it – don\`t forget to COMPLETE it and return to your coaches for checking.
Due to the rain on Friday, the Week 4 nominations for sport have lost one of its key events – Relay Race Competition. But new awards were added to the Dodgeball and Soccer: we introduced separate categories for boys and girls. As a result, the best among girls in Dodge ball was Sasha, among boys – Daniel K; in Soccer – Rachel and Conan.

Conan won ‘Healthy Lunch’, Malina got ‘Best in Art’, Maurice – ‘Best in Music’
This week almost all of Tanya’s students stayed till 5 PM, thus creating a second (along with Sergey’s group) group of Master Camp. The competition in this group was in two categories: best in the group and BLITZ. Strange but true: in both nominations confidently won David W., who won nothing at Day Camp. Probably saved power for Master of Camp?
We hope that in Week 5 all Prize nomination will be requested by our students, including such labor-intensive as a Problem Solving Competition and Home Work.
