Obama, Romney Play Chess For U.S. Presidency;
Kids Play For Trophies At Dr. Ostfeld Fall Memorial!
Except of course the sort of chess the candidates play is much more underhanded, and boring (given how all the moves are the same) but truth be told chess is the only thing any honest person will call it.
Students at our recent Dr. Ostfeld Fall Memorial Scholastic Championships have nobler prizes in mind.
With twenty-two kids participating Lloyd Sho Dennis-Akai, an ica student and Monday class regular, won the section with four points out of four. Lloyd beat Austin Chen, Alex Goldfarb, Zoe Einhorn, and Marvin Mao. Tied for second in the section were Andrew Sung, and Aryeh Lieb “of” Shlionsky “family fame,” who both drew their last round game after Aryeh Lieb found a small double attack combination with his bishop to nullify Andrew’s last passed pawn.
This section was won by Fair Lawn location ICA student Mark Sarnov who scored a perfect four points. The second place finishers were Andrew Volynsky, who knows how to play Twinkle Twinkle little star on guitar, and who only lost to Mark in the last round, as well as Brandon Tsai, Mason Kung, and Jonathan Zhou. All finished with three points right behind Mark. Eighteen kids participated in section two.
The forty-eight person section three was by far the largest of the tournament and as such it was fitting that two players tied for first place. Samuel Fishbein took the official title on tie-breaks with four points, though ICA student Vedant Rautela did all he could to join him racking up four points as well. Third place saw a tie as two players nabbed three-and-a-half points: Yuvanshu Agarwal, and Tunji Emuleomo.
Section four, consisting of twenty-five competitors, was once again won by an ICA student, this time Stephen Petraitis. He was the only player in the section to score perfectly winning all four games. Yanjun Yang was the second place finisher scoring three-and-a-half points. Tied for third were four players in the order of Brandon Ng, Maurice Zacks, Piush Sarkar, and Gregory “Andrew’s big brother” Volynsky.
Section five was won by two ICA students as Alan Stolyarov, and Nick Cardenas drew each other in their final round game to finish with three-and-a-half points each. Michael Chu, Daniel Khaitov, and Phillip Lee, all tied for third place with three points each. Twenty students competed in section five.

Don’t forget we now sell our own scorebooks at each location, and the schedule for all ICA tournaments for the 2012-2013 School Year are on the cover. Our scorebooks have a nice advantage over the traditional ones because they are smaller and can even be folded in half to make it easier for students to handle them with one hand as they are playing their games.
