ICA Master Camp 2013: From Masses To Masters
For more than 10 years the International Chess Academy has been successfully running its Summer chess camp program. Unquestionably, it has been a source of pride to everyone involved with the organization of such a project. With each passing year as the strength of the players developed it became necessary to separate the groups into individual camps of varying strength. Since its inception the camp has been run by the very successful and experienced Russian trainer Sergei Grabuzov. A “Master of Sport” in chess, Sergey has spent the last 35 years developing chess players of all levels. The curriculum of the Master Camp focuses on eight hours of daily lessons (including lunch) as well as an added bonus of extra physical activity after camp (usually involving Soccer). Lessons are usually conducted with a small class size with no more than six to eight students per group. For each week the instructor prepares an optimal program of theoretical lessons that takes into account the level of his students as well as their individual character. Throughout the week each student also receives assignments for independent study that play an important role in the development of each player. Aside from theoretical work in the areas of openings, middlegames, and endgames as well as other important aspects of our ancient, and difficult games, there are also weekly rated tournaments that involve games which are eventually critically analyzed. The Master Camp also places a great deal of emphasis on physical preparation. Sergei understands the importance of not only the chess element of preparation, but being a good athlete, the necessity of competent development of each students physical conditioning. Each day begins with morning exercises and continues throughout the day and in between segments of chess study. Competitions involving various sports, and exercises are decided by a point tally to the winners of such events. The weekly result yields a best athlete based on which individual has collected the most points. These activities take place outdoors. Like in every camp run by Diana Tulman, the Master Camp awards prizes to the winners of each individual competition (prizes for best student, the tournament winner, Best in sports, etc.). As a rule, and as long as a degree of effort is applied, there are no students that go unnoticed with regard to prizes.
