Fair Lawn Week 3
In connection with the opening of the GM Camp, Day Camp, as in previous years, moved to another location. From our trainers’ point of view, the obvious plus of the new arrangement is that the trip to the venue of our sports activities decreased significantly. But from the students’ point of view that was no so good, since they lost the chance to win the “Swag Walker Prize”. But we had the opportunity (in the last 15-20 minutes of Camp) to organize an additional game of Dodgeball - so that the children could get some fresh air and take a break from chess. After all, despite the fact that the camp got a little "older", it still had a lot of very young students who find it difficult to study chess seriously for two hours.
However, in the ranks of our young students, there were some very strong players: Matthew, who just turned 7 years old, won the Main Event of Day Camp – in Section 2, and five-year-old Jane was the strongest in Section 5. Section 4 and Section 3 were the most numerous, and the fight for the top places in them was very hard. As a result, in section 3: Daniel K won 1st place, Alex was 2nd and Dennis - 3rd. In Section 4 three (!) students scored 4 points out of 5. Additional factors have placed the winners as follows: 1st - Jesse, 2nd - Jonathan, 3rd - Eric.
Very intense - to match the tournaments - was the competition: Best in Chess Groups. For a long time there was a sharp struggle between Gabriel and Matthew in Tanya\`s Group. It seemed that they competed only with each other for the winner’s title. However, the opponents got carried away in the match with each otherand had lost sight of Aryeh-Leib, who suddenly jumped out from behind them, and won this prize. Dennis won in Max’s group, Deana in Genry’s, Stefan in David’s. Jane’s and Daniel L’s strength (in Ivette’s group) were almost equal, and only a minimal advantage allowed Jane to win 1st.
But Daniel L. bounced back in the Best in Sports Groups Competition, beating Jane in their age category (2007). In the Age Group 2005-2006 Jonathan excelled, in 2004 - Dennis, in 2003 & older the great athlete Stephen was beyond comparison.
Back to chess: there are about 10 chess nominations in our camp each week. Unfortunately, children do not always use the provided opportunities to excel, and some prizes remained unclaimed. Thus, this week\`s prize Home Work was rawarded only in the Unrated Section. The winner, - precocious and responsible Eric - , not only did not forget to take the home work, but also remembered to bring recorded solutions and showed them to coaches. Not very many contenders were in Best Chess Notation Prize, which, however, does not diminish the merits of Stefan, who produced a remarkable record of his games and deservedly won the prize. Many students were trying their strength in Survival in a Simul Competition. Daniel H won in the rated section and Turner in unrated. The long queue of students who wanted to take part in the Problem Solving competition, could not fail to please the coaches. Aryeh-Leib won in the rated section, and Jane (who managed to break away from her pursuers on the final day of the competition) in unrated.
On a rainy day, when it was impossible to conduct sports activities in the park, we organized a Rainy Day Blitz for top students (Rated Section). Unfortunately, the strongest (by rating) students: Matthew and Aryeh-Leib chose to watch cartoons in the company of unrated players and missed the opportunity to compete for this prize. Daniel H won this tournament (with 6 players), Gabriel took 2nd place and Stephen, Alex and Aaron tied for 3rd. Daniel H. and Stephen confirmed their reputation as good blitz players in Friday\`s Team Championship, bringing their team - Pawns Stars (Stephen, Daniel H., Jesse, Stefan) to Victory!
Same as in week 2, Ivette’s team - Pretty Pink Ponies (Deana, Gabriel, Dennis, Jonathan, Daniel N.) – won Relay Race (another team competition).
The smallest and most nimble: Matthew (boys) and Suran (girls) won the DodgeBall competition. Only boys played soccer this week, and once again Alex was the best soccer player!
Winners in categories related to lunch: “Healthy Lunch” – Stephen, “Best Lunch Consumer’ – Turner.
Aaron was named “the best musician” of the week, and Dennis won in “art competition”.
Jack who tried really hard in chess and in sports, but was a bit unlucky, received “Best Effort” award. We are sure that there will be many more prizes in his collection next week! Good Luck and see you at Week 4!
